FashioNXT UpNXT Competition is Now an Acceleration Program
PORTLAND, Ore., July 13, 2015 – After several years of successfully catapulting emerging fashion designers to the next level of business, FashioNXT is re-branding its Up/NXT runway competition as a designer acceleration program. For the first time, the winner’s benefit-package is boosted with a cash prize to help the winning designer create a new collection, courtesy of Wells Fargo Bank. Other benefits include a year-long support in promoting your business, along with professional consulting.
“Portland has a high concentration of emerging designers with a world class apparel industry. But to be successful as an independent designer in this intensely competitive industry you need a broader support-base to be globally competitive” says Tito Chowdhury, Executive Director of FashioNXT, whose leadership in promoting Portland’s fashion industry has been recognized in TIME Magazine, The Wall St Journal, and by Portland’s highest Mayoral Award. “We are the only entity here that took the initiative to bring the biggest industry leaders in the area to come together to select and support the most talented designers in this 15 month long program.”
“Portland has strongly established itself as the most fertile hotbed of emerging talents in the fashion industry” says Michelle Lesniak, one of Portland’s four designers that won Project Runway, the most by any city. In 2011 Lesniak herself was a contestant of the competition on the same runway. "I am glad to be an active part of your success, and to continue to show with the most effective platform in the region.”
In 2014, Up/NXT finalist Cyndi Koon was selected established Chinese fashion label Nganlok (who also showed at FashioNXT 2014) to design a 60-piece collection in Shenzhen. Competition winner Myriam Marcela says, "Now I can totally see why FashioNXT lists this experience as taking the winner’s label to the next level. Oh my! It’s true! I am so grateful for your vision in supporting fashion in Portland and beyond."
Designers interested in the FashioNXT Up/NXT program are required to appear at the August 9 audition in front a highly influential judging panel. The designers chosen will have their collections and styling skills shown under the bright lights of the FashioNXT runway on Oct 8. Presenting Sponsor Kuni Lexus of Portland, and have earned recognition that only a few others may achieve. This needs to be said differently. One designer will emerge from the competition as the designer who is next – winning a highly impactful prize package.
“Such support for developing designers does indeed require us to work and spend more resources throughout the year,” says Chowdhury. “I am urging the community members who are interested in seeing more talented designers become more business savvy and to contribute financially to the success of Up/NXT.”
